In lieu of the fact the Best Move you've Ever Seen thread has re-surfaced, I thought I'd start a similar thread, but about Directors!

I love movies.. and typically when I find a director I love, I stick with him/her. So here are my top favs, along with some of the best movies (in my opinion) they made. Hope you enjoy! Innocent

  • Darren Aronofsky
    - True, he doesn't have as large of a filmography as some Directors in my list, but there isn't a bad one among them. *swoon
    Pi.
    The Wrestler.
    Black Swan.
    The Fountain.

  • David Lynch
    - What's better than his ethereal and bizarre take on the Dreamworld in almost everything he does? Yes and yes please.
    Twin Peaks.
    Mulholland Drive.
    Inland Empire.
    Blue Velvet.

  • John Carpenter
    - A Who's Who among horror and sci-fi film lovers. The minimal approach, the heightened suspense and the other-wordly music in his films makes them among my absolute favorite! Just seeing this list of movies makes me want to curl up on the couch when I get home. Love.
    Assault on Precinct 13.
    Escape from New York.
    The Thing (!!!!!).
    Big Trouble in Little China.
    They Live.

  • Martin Scorsese
    - Does this man even need an introduction? Of course not. He's a god among Directors.
    Taxi Driver.
    Goodfellas.
    Casino.
    Gangs of New York.
    The Aviator.

  • Roman Polanski
    - Regardless of the scandal, you have to admit this guy gets it right almost every time. His sweeping tales make you forget where you are in time as you plunge head-first in the world he wants you to see.
    The Pianist.
    Chinatown.
    Rosemary's Baby.
    The Ninth Gate.
    The Ghost Writer.

  • Peter Jackson
    - I couldn't make this list without adding the guy who brought my favorite tale to life. I know you know him, but did you know he was a great campy-horror director back in the day, too? Not only did he stay as true as he could (and the scale of it, the SCALE!) to Tolkien's work, he made some bizarro and great 80s flicks.
    Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
    Meet the Feebles. (not kid-friendly!)
    Heavenly Creatures.
    Bad Taste.
    King Kong.

Okay. Proud YOUR TURN!!!!
There are many good ones. 'thul will not repeat any of the above. Adding one name right now because of decent but fun movies. Not the best ones, but still good.
He has an interesting movie coming up sometime mid-early next year ('thul thinks).

Tommy Wirkola

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Dead Snow

Excellent movie, even better soundtrack (Autechre!)

This movie is very high on my to-watch list. Natalie Portman and Darren Aronofsky, that's an awesome bill.

I have to disagree here. The book (The club Dumas) is so much better than the movie. The end doesn't make sense in the movie, it's much better in the book. Emmanuelle Seigner was pretty good though.

One of my favourite directors:
John Hughes
The '80s John Hughes that is. After Home Alone, he hasn't done much interesting.
Pretty in pink
16 candles
Weird science
The breakfast club
Ferris Bueller's day off

Stanley Kubrick
2001: a space odyssey
Full metal jacket
The shining
A clockwork orange
Dr. Strangelove: or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
Yes! Jooost! The Pi soundtrack is one of my favorites. Then again, I love glitchy drum & bass and other bizarro electronic music. Autechre is brilliant.

And of course I didn't forget John Hughes and Stanley Kubrick, I just didn't add them to the top. They're definitely in my top 10, too!

In regards to the Ninth Gate, a lot of people don't think it's a very good film. I just like it. Proud Haven't read the book, though!
Oops, Cry-baby is from John Waters, not John Hughes.

I may have been born in the seventies but I'm an eighties child in all else...and these words transport me right back there!!! Ah, the Brat Pack days...

As for directors, I must admit that I couldn't name any but two without Googling favourite movie titles to find out more! When I read the others, I'd know, but wouldn't know one from another until then.

This having been said, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (yep, the two that everyone on Earth knows! P ) are the extent of my 'director' repertoire...and just as much for their producing and writing really...which is why I haven't commented here yet! Blushing

Still, movies such as Schindler's List, Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark etc (Spielberg directing) and A New Hope etc (Lucas directing) are among my all-time favourites...either alone or collaborating together, these two are masters of film.

As for the existance of other directors, I have a feeling I will learn much in this thread...as I already have! Big Grin
This is an interesting question because most of the time, I don't actually pay all that much attention to the director. I'll have to sort through my favorite films and see if there's a common director somewhere in there.

(It is certainly not Quentin Tarantino, though. I understand that some people might enjoy his style, but it's not my cup of tea at all.)
Oh Maaaaaaan! How on earth did I miss Quentin Tarantino in my top list? Ugh, see? I just like movies, lol. But Quentin is definitely one of my favorites. He gets his inspiration from so many classic directors from the 60s; he was really in to spaghetti westerns and you can see that come out in all of his films. I like spaghetti westerns, so. Wink

Worse: How did I miss Tim Burton in my list? I haven't seen a bad movie by him yet.

Tim Burton
Beetle juice
Big fish
Corpse Bride
Edward Scissorhands
The nightmare before christmas

And a director which may not be well-known:

Lukas Moodysson
Fucking Åmål (Show me love)
Tillsammans (Together)
Lilja 4-ever
Ett hål i mitt hjärta (A hole in my heart)
'thul have only seen one of those nine movies Joost. First on second half. Many years ago.
