Thanks for the spam reports Slurp and apologies for such a slow response from me...I have been on a trek around the state and (of course!!) left my laptop sitting on my kitchen bench, and only realised I didn't have it about 600kms into my trip!

I must admit that all of your responses for the latest thread were so good that I kind of wanted to leave the whole thing there, minus the pics. Smiling I hope that those of you who were interested were all able to save them in time! Big Grin Like fool-ish, I thought it was a nice beach... Wink
Such happens. No worries. It is a natural feature of forums with small moderation staff.
Thanks for the massive lot of reports while I've been on the road...I did take my laptop but had no time to get on. Loved your comments, joost! Big Grin
I'm kinda taking over this thread with my "thanks" but I do appreciate reports especially when I am away on the road for days at a time. Thanks for the last lot 'thul beings. Flowers Bottles I'm not sure about though...at least they serve a useful function!
These beings were awake far longer than supposed to, so they were rather imaginative when it comes to words containing "bot". Far more of those than words that fit with "spam".

Mervi originally allowed unregistered people to reply to, though not start, threads in the Finnish room. She has let me know that she is changing the setting now so hopefully that will alleviate much of the spamming problem, particularly the 'adult' links that have been appearing therein. Thanks all! Thankful
guest postings seem good at first, but after a while one realizes just how impractical they are.
Might it be a good idea to change settings for the Other Universes section so that new users have post approval on first post or two there?

In recent times there has been a number of spambots getting in there.
Keeping the RotE and introduction sections as they are might be best though, considering how slow new users would otherwise be approved. (no offense intended farseer. A single person (or two) approving will naturally have multiple holes in the 24-hour coverage. Its an undeniable but unfortunate fact.)

Another alternative would be post approval for first 2-3 posts for all users universally. It would suffer from the delay in approval common to previous suggestion, but it might be easier to implement.

On phpBB 3.0.9 there is a feature for this, not sure if it is on this MyBB version.
There it is a feature called "newly registered users" group, which can have different permissions from "registered users". When user reaches a certain (configurable) post count, he/she/it is moved automatically to the latter group.

*looks questioningly at Mervi*
Does such feature exist here?

I agree, thanks 'thul.

Yes, now that things in the Finnish room have been secured (ish), loopholes elsewhere are being burrowed into...

I'd love to use this as an excuse to get fiesty with you beings but I just don't have fiesty in me and you speak truth, so, none taken! Big Grin There may be two of us in fact but there really is only one of us in the everyday at present (when I am actually here and not driving somewhere) and likely to be that way for some time to come...

True, true...

I might have a look and see what I can find out re MyBB as I managed to find the solution to the other problem for Mervi when the site crashed not so long ago. Either way, I will pass on all of this and any of my other findings to Mervi - thanks for the thoughtful and helpful suggestions! Flowers

No problem... having access to and experience with the ACP of a large phpBB forum helps a lot.
