Hey everybody (speaks to all the stone dragons about me)

I used to post quite a bit last year, but my life took a very dramatic turn at the end of last year. In a nutshell, I began seriously working on my first novel, Teleria, in January of 2019 after seriously binge reading all of the Realm of the Elderlings books and short stories from various anthologies. I was keeping myself alive and sane by clinging to my characters and world-shaping for dear life. A lot was going on in my personal life, which I won't go into detail about here. By August I had completed my first novel and began agent-hunting. At this time I was living in South Yorkshire, England (lived there for five years). I began the work on my second novel in the trilogy, Dracosia. All of the research and world building really sucks you into a black hole, especially when it's one of the only things keeping you afloat in the middle of an ocean of emotional tumult. I nearly took my life at one point last summer . . .

So. I made a complete change, closed that chapter of my life, packed two bags and got on a plane on New Year's Day bound for New Zealand and I have never looked back. God do I miss all of my Realm of the Elderlings library and anthologies I had to leave behind . . . in the end, all I could take with me was Fool's Fate, which I read now and then like returning to visit an old, kind friend who never changes and hands me a refreshing goblet of apricot brandy. Eventually, I'll re-buy all of those wonderful books again and rebuild my entire library. As Robin Hobb has said, "home is people, not a place." I feel like I am finally home, writing to my heart's content and truly living my life alongside my best friend and the man who has believed in me, inspired me, pulled me out of myself and loved me fiercely for the real me.

One of Robin Hobbs' quotes that has gotten me through so much is the one mentioned in my signature. I live by those words. Accepting the ebb and flow of my life, I have survived it thus far and shall continue to do so.

I stayed up late last night to finish Fool's Fate. Late for me these days (as a parent) is around midnight. Back in the day, late was much later..

What fond memories do you have of staying up late to finish a good Robin Hobb book?

Or have you gone one step further and enjoyed an epic length Hobb-a-thon?

Help me feel it was worth it while I sit here and fight sleep at my desk.

Was she truly the life of this forum?! Looks that way. We haven't seen her in a very very very long time, and that worries me. As much as she loved this space and this series, you'd figure we would see her either here or on Robin's newsgroup, but she hasn't been in either.

I'm also looking for that anime list Joost posted somewhere but my digging/search capabilities are at a -20 today. Apparently.

I just want to tell you all here, that I can't be with you as often as I wish. Up to now I did a lot of reading and writing from my office. But now my company has intensified the safety-level, so that we are not able to log in on sides like this or Amazon etc. anymore. Which is sooooooo annoying for me. I can't make my orders at Amazon, I can't write here and so on, and so on. Horrible !!!
So, don't think, that I'm off and away. I just can't visit you as regularly as before. In the evenings at home I very often simply don't have the time to turn on my laptop.

These beings figured that they'd avoid overly cluttering up "What's happening in your world" thread, so they decided to set up a new thread for their story discussion... It'll be a place where you can slaughter the concepts for some of the characters (not all will be released here), make mockery of the maps and in general point out the numerous crippling flaws...

Anyways... on to the story concept...

It is a fairly large world, set in some form of pseudo-medieval era. Magic is present, and influences things quite a bit.
One of the key problems humans have in this world is the presence of dragonkind. Tens of thousands of dragons. Mostly dumb beasts, but still capable of wielding instinctive magic.
Evolution is in this world working in high gear. Changes that take hundreds of thousands of years on the world known as "Tellus" or "Earth", can happen in the span of a generation or two in the world here. Thus, in the span of a few thousand years, There have evolved several different species of humans, and a number of sub-species to these.

Because of their dragon issues, the majority of humans live where dragons cannot reach them. Some live in confining forests that grow too densely for dragons to enter, while others travel within large herds of animals that are powerful enough to be a danger to dragons, while the majority live underground.

The three main human species are:
Settled - Underground-livers that thrive in caves and darkness, have larger eyes and higher cold tolerance.
Packs - Forest-dwellers that share traits with wolf packs they live with. sometimes slightly furred.
Nomads - Long-limbed, dark-haired people that follow the Glau'mor herds.

Due to the long posts on Gluten currently over at Robin's newsgroup, and hearing your story Farseer, I thought I'd post a blog from a cardiologist who wrote a really good book on why Gluten is bad for everyone, not just those who are allergic or sensitive to it.

As I have confessed before, I am a hoarder. I hoard all sorts of things. I also collect things.

For myself, I collect books, jars (for preserves), recipe books, chook-themed objects, rose-covered objects and 'country' or 'antique-type' paraphernalia eg rolling pins, old washboards, biscuit tins, kerosene lamps etc. Will post some photos of these soon.

For other people I collect milk bottle caps, corks and stamps.

These things are becoming increasingly popular and socially acceptable. Having a tattoo means you're hip. Personally, though... well, I'll be honest: I can't stand it and don't understand why anyone would do it.

Some time ago I was out eating with some fellow students, including a girl with a lot of tattoos. This prompted some conversation and what I really wanted to ask was simply "why?", but I was too afraid of sounding judgmental so I sidn't say anything. Hence me posing the question on the internet...

While I like the movie screencap game, I find it to be very difficult, so to let off some steam, I suggest doing a little caption contest. You know how it goes, but just in case: I'll post a picture, you come up with witty captions. (Multiple captions per person are allowed.) After five persons have replied or five days have passed, whichever comes first, a winner is announced, who posts the next picture.
