The forum, seeing a double-post from a single user within a certain timeframe, did not like that, so it merged the two posts, dividing them internally by using a horizontal line. A most ingenious solution.
Thus the problem that some have faced with duplicated posts, *looks at gielske* is caused by the forum thinking post has been submitted twice and merging those two submissions into one post.
The question to ask is why it interprets your posts as submitted twice. Might you be impatient and click several times to submit? Might your internet be funny, causing forum to think you did that? Might the egg your favorite female dragon laid hatch into two Others instead of one serpent?

The forum will be down for that time, and when it comes back, things might look a bit weird (refreshing the page usually helps to clear your browser's cache) and some features might even be missing (depending on how well the plugin updating will go).

Additionally, IF everything goes smoothly, I might also challenge the beast that is mediawiki, but I will make that announcement here separately. While the forum is up and running, this topic is where you'll find all related info & can ask for help if you have problems. I will also be updating theplentynet twitter account to announce when the downtime starts and ends.
(BTW, that's a page you might want to bookmark if you're not a twitter user and following us already - if there's ever unexpected downtime for the whole site that's where I'll be posting about it too - since I hate facebook. )

Guys, I don't know how to bring this up, but it's been on my mind for awhile and now that the Book Depository was mentioned here, I think it might be time to just get it out of my system.

Some of you might know that I'm participating in the Amazon affiliate program, and that if you purchase books through the links I post in the news/main page or the store, a tiny bit of that revenue goes towards gift certificates -> I get a free book now and then from Amazon. Sometimes people ask how they can help with this site, and I always say that participation (here in the forum, writing in the wiki, letting me know about newsworthy Hobb stuff etc) is the best way to help - and then there's those affiliate links, which have sort of worked as a collective "thank you" in my opinion - besides, for the handful of books I've received, I've tried to choose as many related books as possible, so that I've been able to use them to fill in more details to the wiki etc. So it has been a gift that pays back to those who gave it.

Anyway, with a lot of people boycotting Amazon for various reasons (and understandably so), I've been thinking about switching over to/adding the Book Depository affiliate program. They don't give out gift certificates (at least not at this point), instead they pay you a certain percentage of the price of the books bought through your links. I hate to say it, but at this point (being unemployed etc) this might even be a better option for me, because I could use that money directly to pay for the hosting of this site and domain name. I've already made an account for the site at tBD, but since they only allow you to use text links at this point, I can't really build a store or use widgets like with Amazon, so very few people even notice those links when I post them (in the news so far). Basically, at this point if you want to buy something through the Book Depository and make sure I get some pennies out of it and you can't find a link to that book anywhere on this site, you can visit them through http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/?a_aid=theplentynet and then browse & purchase normally. Not very practical, right?
And this brings me to my point (yes, I have one!)

How would you all feel if I started to embed affiliate links to the wiki pages about the books? They would be clearly marked as affiliate campaign links, and tastefully done. Probably a couple of lines under it's own heading between "editions" and "translations" for example (the links usually refer to English language books so I think that might be the most relevant place).
Or how about a banner or a text link somewhere here in the forums? Would that be absolutely horrible and make you run away screaming?

I don't want to turn this site into one of those monsterous places that have blinking banners in every corner. I'm especially hesitant to add ads on the forum and the wiki without hearing everyone's opinion first because they feel more like property of this little community than the rest of the site.
So, I want to hear what you think! Also, if you have any other, better ideas about how to include affiliate links (esp. through the Book Depository), don't hesitate to let me know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay. I decided to put up a "fundraising ticker" here to show you where the BookDepository.co.uk commission are re: next year's hosting costs. ("Year" here means from September to September, btw, so most of 2010 is already covered.)
Anyway, here are the current affiliate links you can use to browse and buy books. As before, amazons purchases count towards gift certificates, book depository towards a paypal payment.
So, I want to hear what you think! Also, if you have any other, better ideas about how to include affiliate links (esp. through the Book Depository), don't hesitate to let me know.
Okay. I decided to put up a "fundraising ticker" here to show you where the BookDepository.co.uk commission are re: next year's hosting costs. ("Year" here means from September to September, btw, so most of 2010 is already covered.)
A lot has changed, we've tried out several different affiliate programs, some unsuccessfully and of course book depository is owned by amazon these days. *sigh*
Anyway, here are the current affiliate links you can use to browse and buy books. As before, amazons purchases count towards gift certificates, book depository towards a paypal payment.

I just deleted a bunch of accounts that have been spamming this forum. I suspect they were some sort of bots, as their messages were repetitive, they quoted parts of other users' texts and they only posted a few messages each. The first two fooled me because they just appeared to be rather enthusiastic writers that had some difficulties with proper English (which is totally acceptable here, as we are an international community ).
Anyway, I'm posting this to say that please let me know:
- if I have accidentally deleted you/your posts although you're not a spam bot
- if you come across any other suspicious messages that I might have missed

I'll upgrade our forum script tonight and hope it solves the problem for now.

This is mostly a reference for myself so I won't forget to fix these things (when I have time to work on them, that is). But please feel free to add to this list if you notice anything that's wrong with the site (broken links, functions that do not work, something to add/improve etc). The thing is, often when I upgrade scripts, some things get broken. That's unfortunately just the way these things work, but it often goes unnoticed, especially as those problems don't appear in all browsers. *sigh* So, please don't hesitate to tell me if you think something looks weird or doesn't work like you think it should!

- add the recent changes rss in the wiki to the main page
- fix the broken image links in the wiki database
- Internet Explored does funny things to the layout background in the main site
- Firefox seems to render the top border too thick
- some book source links in the wiki do not work, find out what's going on
- the wiki links here in the forum have started to redirect to the main page
- some details in "post a new message" cascade weirdly (is this a Safari problem only?)

Apparently my host has updated something and it has crashed the wiki script. I'll try to figure out the best way to fix this as soon as possible. I should upgrade the wiki script anyway, but I've been waiting for an answer about getting a bigger/better hosting package before doing so, but they haven't answered yet. I have a feeling I might be looking for a new host soon...
