I've been working to get 1st prints of the UK version of the original trilogy (only version with all three in HC from the first Edition). The second was the hardest to find a good deal on, but then I found the 1st and 2nd books being sold as a bundle for cheap, so I jumped on it. I was looking at both copies of Assassin's Apprentice,, to decide which to keep in my collection, and found that one dustjacket has the price in the bottom right of the front interior of the DJ and the other does not. The one missing it isn't clipped, as the DJ has all it's corners intact. Both books have full number lines and are themselves identical. Both DJs have the same ISDN printed on the inside back flap. Searching around, I've found others with both and found both for sale. No one seems to know why these variations exist or which is the true first DJ. I feel like when I was first looking for Assassin's Apprentice I ran into an article mentioning the two and explaining them, but no amount of searching is finding it now. Does anyone on here know why there are two versions? Thanks!

I've recently finished Assassin's Fate and, among all the other feelings, I found myself feeling really inspired by Hobb's wisdom, and how she expresses it through her phrasings and vocabulary. She has a way of phrasing or explaining things that is beautiful, relatable, and introspective. And she also uses the most random and fun vocabulary, I had to refer to a dictionary so many times! I read all the books on kindle so I went back and looked at all the lines I had highlighted throughout the whole series, and wanted to share a few of my favourites here, and see if anyone else had any favourite lines or vocab from Hobb. I don't think there are any spoilers below because all the lines are out of context, but let me know if I should add a spoiler tag.

I just finished RotE and have written this.

I don't quite know why I wrote this, I usually don't write anything, but obviously needed to write it, maybe another influence from these books, I don't intend to burn my PC when I'm done writing

April 10, 2020 I have just finished the books written in a song of ice and fire series, and are left little frustrated that the story was not finished and with a little empty feeling for all the missing ends of story lines.

I have to start a series, search for an hour or so and eventually find that the best bid for a new series I could start with was the realm of the elderlings, I started and yesterday 04 July 2020 it was all over after spending just over 500 hours listening to all the RotE books.

I started with RWC, don't quite know why, I thought they were good, but not exceptional and a little long drawn at times, after hearing them, I thought it would be better to go back and start with book 1.

After listening to TFT and LST I realized that there had been many things and references in RWC I didn't understand at first, so I heard almost the whole RWC one more time, except the parts that Hest(it means horse in Danish is in as he is irrelevant to the rest of the story and it is very annoying to hear his thoughts and the opinion of himself and others.

I don't know how long after I started Assassin's Apprentice before it dawned on me that this was not a "normal" book but something far beyond what I've come to expect from a book I've heard many audiobooks and many books are lacking in depth and seem impersonal, but back to what I would like to write about, Robin Hobb does something very specific about the way she does her character development, the characters get a depth and get "real" in a way that is difficult for me to describe, but it can make me cry both out of grief when bad things happen in their lives, with and of joy when they doing well, and there are hardly any other of the + 600 books I heard there can do it.

I only encountered this once with another author, through all the books I have heard, a Danish author by the name of Susanne Clod Pedersen who is not so well known unfortunately and only one of her books has been translated into English, I put her in some areas at almost equal footing with Robin Hobb, as the two best authors I've heard books and would definitely recommend her books or book for the one book that has been translated, for those who can't read Danish, I find her an exceptionally good author and I've heard her books several times and she was the first author I came across with such a deep and present person gallery as I have now also found in the RotE books.

This type of writer who knows how to do this is obviously very rare and in my opinion should be supported with what you can

In my listening to the RotE books there have been days that have "disappeared" I have sat down to listen to the book for example at 11 am and after what has felt like 1-2 hours looked at what the time it was and it become evening at 8 pm ? something of the same has happened 2-3 times where I came home on Friday evening and sat down to listen at 10 pm and continued without realizing how long it had been until 04/05 in the morning, i have come to think of it as "drowning in memories" perception of one's own time and place disappears, it has often been very difficult to let go of the book again, but you have to sleep, eat, work and various other things that keeps us alive 

Unfortunately, books ended, I thought it was a good ending for Fitz, Beloved and Nighteyes, I could have done without Fitz having to hit that dart with the traitor's death, so they could have waited to make their stone wolf to a later point, so Fitz and Bee could have had more time together as humans? they both deserved that to a great extent, I have no doubt that they will meet again in the skillstream, Bee is as I have perceived it a very strong skill user who currently has no training in using it.

Would like the story to continue.
Bee and the seven duchies person gallery continued history could be very exciting, but there are also many of the other persons, elderlings and dragons I'd really like to hear about how things have gone, Althea / Brashen, Malta / Reyn, Thymara / Tats , Alise / Leftrin, Selden / Chassim? Just to name a few, there are so many untold stories left in this universe, which is why the ending leaves me with an empty sensation.

This is translated from Danish with google and edited by me so it should make sense in English, if there is anything that doesn't make sense it's my fault J

I finished reading Assassin's Fate last night. I started reading the RotE books almost fifteen years ago now. They've been a background, but still important, part of my life and my wife's life for so long. We even named our Labrador Nettle.

I feel like I'm in a sort of mourning. I can't read anything today. I don't want to start another book too soon because it feels disloyal. Well.. it is something I have loved that has ended, and the characters have felt so real to me over such a long period of time. I feel like I couldn't possibly find a series as good as this to replace it. Time will heal. At least it's a happy kind of pain.

On the plus side, there is a far bit I haven't read because I took the short path! Yes, I suffered some very big spoilers regarding the in-between trilogies, but I didn't mind too much.

So now I can look forward to reading all of the RotE short stories for the first time, the first trilogy again for the first time in fifteen years, the liveship books to completion (I stopped halfway through The Mad Ship.. I have no idea why now, it was years ago), and I skipped the Rain Wild books the first time through because the last trilogy was coming out and I couldn't wait..

So still a lot to look forward to - and I am excited about reading the books again knowing more about the world and the people. I trust Robin to have known so much all along and I expect to find a lot on the page I never saw the first time.

Time for a short break then, and then to read something else and to process what has been an amazing first journey through the Realm of the Elderlings. I'll be re-starting again soon with Homecoming, a re-read of The Wilful Princess, and Cat's Meat.

I can also now explore these forums more without fear of running into main story arc spoilers.

I'm Laura, from Italy, I'm new here

Sooo... I'm translating the tale "Homecoming" by Robin Hobb (of course!) from "Epic Legends of Fantasy" for an Italian publishing house and I need help from you experts of the series of the Realm of the Elderlings, because I haven't (unfortunately) read the books.

The author talks about "Elder Kings and their Harlot Queens"... can someone tell me who are they, and, ehm... I mean... why harlot??!

Antoher question, the tales is divided into chapters, each one beginning with "day 10th, 11th etc... of the Fish Moon" or the Plow Moon, Greening Moon.. and so on. Is this kind of calendar used in the books?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!!

Beware, I am going to put spoilers for the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, do not continue if you are not there yet.

I read the RotE books a while ago. The first trilogy I loved but in a normal, healthy way. I read the books, then put them away and went on with my life. When I reached the Tawny Man trilogy I gradually became so invested in the books that I started reading them anywhere, all the time, and even when I was not reading I would continue to think about the characters. I started feeling resistance against normal day life tasks, such as putting out the garbage or folding the laundry, because it was just so drab compared to reading my books and living along with the characters. When I reached the end of Fools Fate, I realized I was worse in than I had realized. I felt as if the sad goodbye had happened to my self. I felt sad for a long period of time. I am not sure what the Fool represents to me of what chord he resonates, but it must be something deep and good. In the end I decided that the only way to get over the obsession, was to continue reading and surely at the end of the Fitz and the Fool series, I would be able to give it some closure. Right..?

But then I started reading the last trilogy and found out what had become of Beloved. Needless to say, I felt heartbroken. The extended torture, the vivid descriptions of it, the complete and utter breakdown of such s wonderful character who had already been immensely tragical. I read it to the end but without joy. And even though the end did give me a sense of closure, it took a lot longer than I expected to land back into my own life again. That horrible feeling of reading the parts about the Fool kept with me for quite some time.
I now recently wanted to re-read, just the first trilogy. Do you consider that going to these extreme was necessary for the story? I do understand that a motivation for Fitz needed to be created, I understand the appeal of fighting pure evil and I understand that a process of decline can emotionally draw one into a story.
So. I love it the way Robin Hobb uses that word throughout her books when a character is coming to a point or about to ask a question or just needs a space filler to their spoken thoughts.

But I digress! So. This is my first started topic thread to discuss various things I wonder at or find marvelous about various characters and revelations, understandings, a sort of place holder for my thoughts of all I've read and the books I've yet to read. If you don't already know from my intro post, I'm reading the books in a very strange order. For one thing, I like to know how things will turn out, GIVE me spoilers, I don't mind--I still enjoy the unraveling of how such events came to be and what can be learned of each character and what can I take away from it for myself? So. I began by reading the first Farseer trilogy when a co-worker gave me a copy of Assassin's Apprentice and I got so addicted to it I swallowed those books whole, demanding the next one from my co-worker, Mark and throwing a hissy fit when he delayed in getting me his copies. If we had more time at work I would seek him out more and spend time talking to him about all my thoughts and questions (he's read all the books of course). After that first trilogy I then went on to read the last trilogy--Fitz and the Fool. Mark gasped at me when he heard I was doing this--he said he's never heard of anyone reading it so out of order. Hehe! I'm GLAD I have done this because as I'm now going back and reading The Tawny Man trilogy (just finished Fool's Errand yesterday and have started Golden Fool) so many little details stand out to me and make so much sense. If I'd read them in order a lot of the finer details would have been lost on me as I devour the books to find out what's going to happen. I know what will be for the most part and now I have time to slowly digest these wonderful books and gather answers to some of my questions or flesh out reflections.

One thing that has really been bothering me (from Fool's Errand) is when Dutiful and Fitz are at Others' Island and Dutiful get's lost in the Skill, Fitz has to go in after him but gets unraveled himself. What and who is that magnanimous, omniscient type creature who unravels their tangled, lost threads in the Skill like she's unwinding a ball of yarn? She mentions that she remembers why they enjoyed toying with these silly humans who are all so dramatic. Is this Presence in the Skill ever mentioned again? She can't be a human who's "died" in the Skill like Shrewd or caught up in the Skill because she calls them 'humans'. Is she a dragon? I don't think so . . my gut instinct tells me no. She's so kindly towards Fitz and she's so knowledgeable, able to untwine his anma and Dutiful's back into two beings to send them back whole. That's a very powerful Person. It makes me wonder if she might be a god? Like Eda or even Sa? I asked Mark and he has no clue and said she was never mentioned again in any of the other books. So . . . hmmmm. He says he thinks she might have been a literary device of Hobb's to move the plot forward. I could understand this if it is so, but I hope not. I wish we could learn more about her kind, these Powerful Beings Who Live in the Skill.

I have so many other thoughts, questions, and reflections to share but as I'm at work my time is limited. I'll try to get online later on at home and post some more here. But at least now I have a place I can come and dump all my mental musings.

Anyone know any other Hobb-inspired Lego projects? Or perhaps you're building your own? (My nephew has some of the dragons from the Elves series, maybe I could borrow them for a bit...

This is a bit of a random question but here goes -

I have read the liveship trader series, the farseer series, the tawny man and the fitz and the fool series.

I read these a long time ago - maybe 15 years ago (??).

Anyway, In one of those series of books I remember a scene where someone gets knocked to the floor by a bad guy - who thinks they are in control, but then it transpires the person on the floor is extremely powerful (but also humble) and they basically suck the life out of the bad guy.

I just really want to know in what book, and where abouts, this scene occurred and wondered if anyone recognised my description of the scene..??

So, I just finished Assassin's Quest.

I got attached to Fitz in book 1, felt like book 2 showed him oppressed with many injustices and implied that he'd somehow find a way to be with Molly, and then the end of book 3 felt like a kick to my gut. Poor Fitz tries so hard but has failed at everything he has attempted in regards to accomplishing his personal goals. And everyone is mean to him.

Heck, the only non-villains in the book by the end are the Fool and Nighteyes. (Nighteyes is such an awesome character.. I love how he tells that Elderlings that 'we are pack' when they are awakened).

I felt like I just watched the movie Castaway where Tom Hanks strives so hard to escape the island, then when he gets back home he finds out that his girlfriend married someone else and has a bunch of kids now. And then the movie's over. lol.

I really enjoyed the setup in these books, but the ending really did not deliver at all. I am sincerely wondering if I should even read the next book or not? I know that bad things happen to good people all the time, but I need to see Fitz get some justice and accomplish his dreams at some point, not continually get kicked around like a dog.

What should I do? lol...

So after finishing assassin's fate I went back and started rereading the series and I came across this prophecy"comes the catalyst,to make stone of flesh and flesh of stone at his touch shall be wakened the dragons of earth. the sleeping city shall tremble and waken to him. Comes the catalyst." So I kinda have a theory that fizts may come back. And I do admit I could just be that awakened stone is flesh like. So Thoughts?
Prophecy is from assassin's quest chapter 28 or about 69% of kindle.
