It's a sad setting. Sarah is a fine old woman, and I felt depressed reading about her world fading away. I gave the story a second title in my head: Loss. She lost her friend, her security..<br />

Maybe I am just associating it with my own sad memories, but I think it is worth reading.<br />

I haven't read the other short stories from that anthology, I don't know yet if I'd suggest to get the book.]]></description>

As some of you may know, one of the contributors is none other than our very own Megan Lindholm, with her contribution being 'The Unicorn in the Maze'. <br />
<br />
It's an enjoyable little short story that allowed me to not only introduce ML/RH to my youngest but it also gave me an opportunity to glimpse still more RotE parallels. <img src="https://theplenty.net/forums/images/smilies/ouch.gif" alt="Ouch" title="Ouch" class="smilie smilie_55" /> Oh, Farseer, come on! <title><![CDATA[Reading Wizard of the Pigeons (Spoilers)]]></title>

			<dc:creator><![CDATA[<a href="https://theplenty.net/forums/member.php?action=profile&uid=62">Albertosaurus Rex</a>]]></dc:creator>
			<guid isPermaLink="false">https://theplenty.net/forums/thread-312.html</guid>
			<description><![CDATA[Alright, so I'm trying to do my own analyzing-as-I-go type of topic. <span style="font-style: italic;" class="mycode_i">Wizard of the Pigeons</span> is a fairly short novel, just under 300 pages. I'm currently on page 110. It's a typical Lindholm book: readable, but not quite as good as a Hobb novel. It reminds me a little of her short story <span style="font-style: italic;" class="mycode_i">The Fifth Squashed Cat</span>: it takes place in our world, which does have magic but you have to be prepared to follow some pretty odd rules to use it.<br />
<br />
<div class="spoiler_wrap"><div class="spoiler_header"><a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="javascript:if(parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display=='block'){parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='none';this.innerHTML='&lt;img title=&quot;[+]&quot; alt=&quot;[+]&quot; src=&quot;/images/collapse_collapsed.png&quot; class=&quot;expandspoiler&quot; /&gt;So, on to the spoilage...';}else {parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display='block';this.innerHTML='&lt;img title=&quot;[-]&quot; alt=&quot;[-]&quot; src=&quot;/images/collapse.png&quot; class=&quot;expandspoiler&quot; /&gt;So, on to the spoilage...';}"><img title="[+]" alt="[+]" src="/images/collapse_collapsed.png" class="expandspoiler" />So, on to the spoilage...</a></div><div class="spoiler_body" style="display: none;">Our main character is Wizard, a Vietnam veteran who lives on the streets of Seattle. He goes by Wizard because he either doesn't remember his name or doesn't want to use it, I'm not sure. So far, all wizards we've met in the story are homeless, and they each have to follow their own rules. In Wizard's case, he must never have more than one dollar in his wallet, he must feed the pigeons and he must remain celibate. He also must tell anyone who asks him the truth.<br />
<br />
We see Wizard going through a typical day, scavenging for food and influencing other people's lives for the better. We also meet a few of his "collegues", including Cassie, the woman who "recruited" him. She has a different body every time he meets her, and he's implied to have some kind of feelings for her.<br />
<br />
At night, Wizard is attacked my a mysterious prsence calling itself "Mir". Mir shows Wizard a scene from his past, involving three boys slaughtering chickens and a rooster. Mir says Wizard was one of the boys, but he experiences the memories of all three and doesn't know which one he is. He manages to escape, but not before Mir wounds the cat that was sleeping nearby.<br />
<br />
Bedraggled, Wizard seeks out Cassie and winds up in another world. Cassie occasionaly brings him there, but afterwards Wizard always finds himself questioning the reality of the experience. Cassie states that Mir is a grave threat to anyone. Also, she tells Wizard that he was the <span style="font-style: italic;" class="mycode_i">rooster</span> in the memory...<br />
<br />
So: who or what is Mir? I'm betting that Mir was one of the other boys. One of them was rather cruel and delighted to be killing chickens, so maybe he became much more evil and powerful over time. Or maybe that's too obvious. There's also the interesting question how much of what Wizard experiences is real, and how much is the product of a deluded mind.</div></div>]]></description>

I don't get it. It's not that these new covers aren't good, but compared to the John Howe covers they're just so bland. Besides, why can't they release the books in one volume, as they were originally written? Apparently it was split because of length issues back in the eighties, but with the fat books on the shelves these days, I think it's no longer a problem. <description><![CDATA[I've just received my order for Alien Earth by Megan Lindholm from Amazon UK - and it's in French!! <img src="https://theplenty.net/forums/images/smilies/crying.gif" alt="Crying" title="Crying" class="smilie smilie_49" /> <img src="https://theplenty.net/forums/images/smilies/rant.gif" alt="Rant" title="Rant" class="smilie smilie_34" /><br />
<br />
Honestly; a book with an English title bought from an English shop, you'd think it would be in English, wouldn't you? What on Earth are they doing even selling French books?! Now that I know I can indeed see, in the description; "Language: French". But who thinks of checking that?!<br />
<br />
Now it's going to cost me just as much to send it back as it would to just buy a new one. Sniff!! I'm not happy! <img src="https://theplenty.net/forums/images/smilies/down.gif" alt="Down" title="Down" class="smilie smilie_60" />]]></description>

I have to wonder about one thing, though - the books appaer to have a new ISBN and Amazon doesn't show the cover, so... do they have new cover art? I hope not, because I loved the old cover art.]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[I have not read any Megan Lindholm books. Could someone give me a good suggestion of the first book I should buy? Does she write in trilogies like with Robin Hobb? Do I need to read her books in order? <img src="https://theplenty.net/forums/images/smilies/smiling.gif" alt="Smiling" title="Smiling" class="smilie smilie_59" /> Thanks in advance for the suggestions!]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Hi all! I'm here as a Hobb fan, but have never read any Lindholm. I've read that Hobb thinks the two styles of writing are quite distictive and I'm curious. If I love Farseer/Liveship/Tawny Man, would I like Megan Lindholm? What would you say is different between the two styles of story-telling?]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[Has anyone read these? I just received my first Liavek book today (bought it on eBay). My problem is that it's "[[Liavek, Players of Luck]]" which is the <span style="font-style: italic;" class="mycode_i">second</span> one in this series. Should I wait until I can find a copy of the first book, or can I just dive right in? I remember reading that the character in the Lindholm stories is always the same one, so maybe I should start from the beginning? *bites nails*]]></description>
