Tips for using the forum

If you're mentioning something that you think might spoil the plot you can, and should, use the spoiler tag.
For example if you compare Fitz and Nevarre in a discussion about the Farseer trilogy, and mention details about Nevare's story to illustrate your point. You don't need to hide spoilers in a discussion that is clearly labelled to be about the topic you're discussing, for example what happens to Thymara in a discussion titled "City of Dragons".
Here's how to use the spoiler code:

wikifying links (works again but requires a new tag!)
You can link to articles in the PlentyWiki simply by using a bit of code around a word (it should be a name or a term that can be found at Plentywik)i.
For example

gives you Burrich is one of my all-time favourites.

tagging users (this is still an experimental thing)
You can draw a user's attention to a discussion by tagging them. This works by adding the @-symbol in front of their username (for example: @Mervi - please note that there is no space!). When you tag someone, it sends them a private message (and additionally, depending on their settings, an email).
If you find this annoying, you can disable emails about PMs in your profile settings or you can choose to only accept them from people in your buddy list. It has been reported that tagging doesn't necessarily work with usernames that contain spaces.

User titles
This board includes a system of user titles that are based on the number of posts made. The titles are currently the following:

* nameless the dog-boy (Minimum Posts: 0)
* newboy (Minimum Posts: 1)
* fitz (Minimum Posts: 50)
* changer (Minimum Posts: 100)
* catalyst (Minimum Posts: 250)
* beloved (Minimum Posts: 750)

You can also change your title to whatever you want in your profile.

Admins and moderators

I've been the only administrator and moderator of this forum since the beginning, and even though we're not exactly high-traffic or infested with problematic users (thank you everyone for playing so nicely! ) I've often thought that a moderator or two could be a good thing to have for those days when I'm too busy to visit. An unexpected real life situation has now limited my "hanging around online" time considerably, hence I've asked Farseer to join the ranks & she has agreed. Please welcome our very first forum moderator, Farseer!

The moderator status means having the control of tools such as
- editing, deleting, splitting, merging and moving topics and posts
- editing calendar events and forum announcements
- warning, editing and banning users

So from now on, when you report a message as spam or start a new thread in the off-topic room, chances are that Farseer notices it before me and acts on it. You can also ask her to move or delete something or ask for help. Private messages are usually the best way to do that, as such requests tend to get lost in normal forum conversations. The things that only an admin (= me) can do are opening new rooms, fixing the layout, upgrading the forum script etc. The sort of stuff that usually doesn't require quick response. We're also living in completely different time zones, so even when things in my life return to a more normal state, this means we'll be covering more forum activity time zone-wise. If everything works well, I might consider adding another mod to the team from either American continent so we can theoretically cover the whole globe.

1. Be on your best behaviour like Burrich taught you. No flaming, name-calling, flooding or attacking other posters. (You will be warned and next time around banned.)

2. Your resident Admin has zero tolerance policy on spam and a keen nose for it, so you WILL be deleted and banned. Immediately.

3. Please be careful with spoilers. Not everyone here has read all the books (yet) and just when you first read them, likes to discover the surprises themselves. Learn to use the spoiler code: put the spoilers bits between

Browse responsibly. Stay away from rooms and discussions which are about books you haven't yet read.
Label your discussions clearly. "Wolves in Royal Assassin" is a good title, "I have a question" is not.
Use the spoiler code if you're discussing something that doesn't quite belong into that particular topic. For example: comparing Althea and Ki in a discussion about Harpy's Flight? Cool, but hide the parts about Althea since they are spoilers for Liveship Traders.

4. No fan fiction based on Robin's characters, no links to such fanfiction. This is a site-wide policy. You can discuss fanfiction in general, though - there's a couple of topics already. And posting fanart is very much ok.

5. No uploading of illegal copies of books/short stories or links to them.
Robin's publishers sometimes give away free samples or even whole books to download for a limited time, and linking to these is very much okay as long as the offer stands. Some short stories, such as Cut, have been officially published online and are free to read. If you're not sure whether an online copy is legal, ask the moderators before posting a link. Please support your favourite author and don't steal. (Try searching your local library for the book instead. If they don't have it, ask if it's available as an interlibrary loan or if they would consider buying a copy. Also, a lot of the older titles are still available in used books stores, both online and in real shops.)

6. Although there is a room for off-topic chat, this is a forum for a very specific subject. Feel free to discuss your life and thoughts with other users, but please don't use the forum as a platform for your politics/religion/ideology/home business.
