The rulers of the Six Duchies, a line which started with Taker who arrived from the Out Islands, and continues to King-In-Waiting Dutiful and then, presumably, his son Prosper.

The Line of Inheritance
Inheritence of the crown is chronological; the eldest child of the reigning monarch, or the nearest relation with the strongest Farseer blood will be first on the throne, regardless of gender. At 16, the oldest heir will become King- or Queen-in-Waiting, a position designed to give the potential ruler the power he or she desired while helping teach the responsibility that goes with it before they ascend to the throne.

If a ruling Farseer dies and the King-in-Waiting or Queen-in-Waiting is not yet adult, the ruler's spouse will continue to rule over the Six Duchies, even if he or she contains less Farseer blood than their children.

The Skill
All of the Farseer line show themselves in possesion of the Skill, and throughout the their history have used Skill-coteries. The Skill was taught to all royalty, save for a brief period from King Bounty to Queen Kettricken, when it was only taught to Princes, and from then on was taught to all in the Six Duchies who showed a talent for it, royal or not.

Infidelity
There is a large history of infidelity amongst the Farseer royals, with both the men and the women of the line having bastard children in and out of court, as seen with Fitz, Chade, Charger and Galen. While still being scandalous, it does not appear to be that unnacceptable to have a bastard, and are thus allowed to live at court, and even wear the family crest, albeit with a red line embroidered through it to show their illegitimate birth.

Names
The Farseer line has a tradition of naming nobles after the virtues they wish them to hold, and they often do, sometimes in extremes and other times only subtly showing the characteristics they are named for. The names can be something seen as entirely positive (such as Verity), or something ambiguous in nature (as seen with Shrewd).

Althea Vestrit is the younger daughter of Ephron Vestrit and Ronica Vestrit, younger sister of Keffria Vestrit.
When we first meet Althea, she is a willful tomboy but through trials and adventures she grows up a lot and learns more responsibility.

Childhood
After the Blood Plague killed the three Vestrit sons in their youth, Ephron Vestrit saw fit to make Althea the heir to his liveship Vivacia. For all intents and purposes, Althea grew up on the Vivacia and fully expected to be named its captain upon her father's death. Instead, no sooner has Vivacia quickened then Althea finds Ronica has given Vivacia to Keffria's husband Kyle Haven. Kyle, a Chalcedean who believes women have no place aboard ship, removes Althea from Vivacia and installs his son Wintrow Vestrit, whose schooling as a priest Kyle has interrupted for this purpose.

Kyle also removes Ephron's first mate Brashen Trell, a social outcast who Ephron redeemed, from Vivacia's crew, and soon makes his plans known to make Vivacia a slaver — to Althea and the rest of the family's horror, as a liveship will not tolerate so much human suffering. Keffria and Ronica begin to question their course to install Kyle as captain, despite Kyle's assurances he will treat his slaves gently.

Althea is a longtime friend of the liveship Paragon, whom she first met as a little girl.

Appearance
Althea is petite and slender, and bears a striking resemblance to her nephew Wintrow. She has dark hair, skin rather tanned from much time aboard ship, and wears a wizardwood charm shaped like a skull at her navel to prevent conception.

Adulthood
After Kyle kicks her off Vivacia, Althea vows to get her ship back. She flees home and with help from Amber disguises herself as a ship's boy named "Athel Vestrit," and works her way through a voyage on a seal-hunting ship, the Reaper. On that voyage she meets again with Brashen, who does his best to protect her and to help her be a good sailor without being obvious; there is tension between them as well as friendship. She proves very efficient at skinning the animals and packing the meat, and wins the respect of the captain.

When at the end of the first voyage Althea asks for her ship's ticket and reveals her true identity, the Captain kicks her off the ship without pay for her deception, and for being a woman.

Amber buys a shop in Bingtown, on Rain Wild Street, selling intriguing wood jewellery she carved herself.

Amber was instrumental in the raising of the Liveship Paragon, as well as helping Althea Vestrit out when she first ran away from her home. Amber was looking for a nine-fingered slaveboy who looked like Althea, but couldn't find him. Her real Catalyst (instead of Althea) would have been Wintrow Vestrit, Althea's nephew.

Paragon eventually convinces Amber to restore his damaged face, as well as his body, after he sails. She gives him the visage, torso and body of Fitz, down to his broken nose and his scar, feeding Paragon his own wizardwood as she carves it away. She lets Jek and Althea learn that this is the face of her one true love.

Amber does partly achieve in her mission: the dragon Tintaglia is awakened. Tintaglia and She Who Remembers guide the sea serpents to cocooning place, but the newborn dragons are weak and can't manage on their own.

The Fool drops this guise in favor of Lord Golden when he returns to the Six Duchies during the events of the Tawny Man trilogy. However, he steps into the guise of Amber again when Jek pays a visit (also causing much surprise from Jek when she meets Fitz in person and recognizes him from Paragon's figurehead). The transformation back and forth from male to female is so complete it raises more questions concerning The Fool.

The Fool drops this guise when he returns to the Six Duchies during the events of the Tawny Man trilogy. However, he steps into the guise of Amber again when Jek pays a visit (also causing much surprise from Jek when she meets Fitz in person and recognizes him from Paragon's figurehead). The transformation back and forth from male to female is so complete it raises more questions concerning The Fool.

She flees home and with help from Amber disguises herself as a ship's boy named "Athel Vestrit," and works her way through a voyage on a seal-hunting ship.

The Elderling race is the result of humans and dragons living closely with one another.

Appearance
Although the descriptions are never consistent, Elderlings generally have long, slender limbs and unusually vibrant and colorful eyes. They develop iridescent scaling upon their skin, a side effect of sharing their lives with dragons.

The unpleasant growths the Rain Wild Traders experience may be a mutation of Elderling characteristics due to living close to, but not in harmony with dragons.

History
The first Elderlings came into existence when primitive humans living in the Rain Wilds area began to mingle their society with that of the dragons. Those who developed bonds with dragons began to adopt some of the larger beast’s physical and mental characteristics.

Elderlings became assistants to the dragons, aiding in the care of dragon eggs and ensuring the survival of the dragon species. In return, they developed extended lifespans, and were able to cultivate an advanced civilization amongst the Rain Wilds.

At some point in time, a catastrophic earthquake known as The Great Quake destroyed the civilization of the Elderlings, killing them and the dragons and sealing away the remaining unhatched serpents in their cocoons beneath the ruins of Frengong.

Civilization
The Elderlings built their cities as large communal houses, with chambers and halls linking rooms like a catacomb or labyrinth. They relied on jizdin, a glowing metal with unique properties, hammered into strips, to provide light in their halls. Elderlings fostered the dragon eggs, constructing birthing halls where young dragons were hatched under the watchful eyes of their parents and Elderling caretakers.

Little else is known about Elderling society, except that theirs was prosperous and highly advanced. They possessed a unique quality of magic with which they created their society. It is known they valued music, theatre and traditional arts.

In the Farseer Trilogy
Elderlings are first introduced to the story in a tapestry in Fitz's bedroom, which depicts King Wisdom greeting an Elderling. It is believed by the characters of the Farseer Trilogy that the Elderlings are the mammoth stone beasts that come to the aid of the Six Duchies against the Red Ship Raiders. These stone creatures, sleeping in a vast garden hidden in the Mountain Kingdom, are in fact a revered form of Elderling art. Elderlings discovered that by carving dragon forms out of memory stone and filling them with memory, they would eventually take flight for a brief period of time. The practice was seen as a way to honour dragons.

In the Liveship Traders
Long after The Great Quake killed the Elderlings and buried their cities, the remaining cocoons of unborn dragons were sawn open and shaped into wooden planks (“wizardwood”) by the Rain Wild Traders. These planks were used to construct ships that eventually became sentient and were resistant to the acidic quality of the Rain Wild River, hence the existence of liveships.

Malta and Selden Vestrit freed Tintaglia, the last dragon left alive within her cocoon. Through their association with her, they began to change into Elderlings. It is reasonable to assume that Malta, along with her beau Reyn Khuprus and younger brother Selden, will revive the Elderling race and restore the dragons and Elderlings to their former glory.

The Elderling Queen

A tapestry in the ruins of Frengong depicts a young Elderling queen with a large, scarlet scar upon her forehead. Malta Vestrit severely injures her head on the night of Bingtown’s uprising, leaving her with a similar crest. Reyn describes Malta as “crowned”, and the dragon Tintaglia later refers to Malta as “rewarded” with “the scarlet crest."

Known Elderlings
Malta Vestrit

Selden Vestrit

Reyn Khuprus

Quotes
Tintaglia:
“I see you have been well rewarded for your part in freeing me, young queen. A scarlet crest. You will take much pleasure from that.”

Selden Vestrit

Reyn Khuprus

Quotes
“I see you have been well rewarded for your part in freeing me, young queen. A scarlet crest. You will take much pleasure from that.”

The Six Duchies is a kingdom consisting of six duchies.

The Duchies
The kingdom consists of six duchies, each ruled by a Duke, which in turn is ruled by the King that lives in Buckkeep.

Each Duchy has a colour and a sigil that represent it.

The Coastal Duchies:
*Bearns (yellow, flower)
*Buck (blue, buck)
*Rippon
*Shoaks

The Inland Duchies:
*Tilth
*Farrow (goldenrod)

(The rest of the colours are red, green and purple.)
History
The founding of the Six Duchies came with the arrival of its first king, Taker Farseer. Taker Farseer was a raider from the Out Islands who decided to make the wooden fortifications of Buckkeep his new home. From there he founded the first of the Six Duchies, Buck. After his death the head of the Farseer Family continued as the King of Buck. Subsequently, the kingdom expanded to include the other three Coastal Duchies, Bearns, Rippon and Shoaks.

The future King Victor conquered the inland regions, including Sandsedge, which would later become a part of the Duchy of Farrow.

When King Wielder realized that he couldn't conquer the Chalced States he turned his ambitions inland and easily defeated the scattered nomadic populations of the Farrow region. The erstwhile king of Tilth surrendered too when he noticed that his territory was surrounded and his trade routes severed. Both conquered territories were exploited for over a generation for the benefit of the Coastal duchies.

It was Wielder's granddaughter Munificence who wisely seeked to truly united kingdom. It was she who first called her kingdom the Six Duchies. She elevated the tribal elders of the Farrow folk and the former ruling families of Tilth to nobles, and used marriages and land grants to forge alliances between the Inland folk and the Coastal duchies. Despite all her efforts, there has always been a rift between these areas, because the folk, climate and livelihoods differ greatly between them.

At some point before the reign of King Shrewd, King Wisdom was bitterly besieged by raiders from the sea. Despite all attempts to repel them, it became apparent that the next summer of fair weather would see the fall of the House Farseer, and the Six Duchies. In desperation, Wisdom, a religious fanatic, resolved to spend the winter searching for the legendary Elderlings — whom some believed to be demi-gods. Little was known about the Elderlings, only that they resided in the Rain Wilds, beyond the tallest mountains of the Mountain Kingdom. Wisdom's quest was literally a last resort, a desperate gamble that paid off — somehow he found them. King Wisdom never returned to Buckkeep, but the Elderlings came to his daughter, the Princess Mindful, and offered their allegience to her. Then they proceeded to drive the raiders away from the coasts of the Six Duchies, allowing the re-establishment of peace, and trade. As the minstrels have it, they vowed that if ever they were needed, they would return — even from beyond the grave.

During King Shrewd's reign the old division between the Inland Duchies and the Coastal Duchies was worsened because his offspring were of two queens: Constance of the Coastal folk and Desire of the Inland population. The original heir, Chivalry, decided to abdicate after he fathered a bastard child, Fitz. He died soon afterward. Subsequently, Shrewd's second son, Verity became the King-In-Waiting. When the Red Ship War broke out between the Six Duchies and the Out Islands he had to marry Kettricken, the Heir of the Mountain Kingdom in order to get lumber to build a fleet of warships to defend the coastal shores. Eventually, Verity saw that he had to go in search of the fabled 'Elderlings' in order to save his kingdom.

When Verity leaves and doesn't return, many fear that he is dead. After Shrewd dies while Verity is still absent, the third son, Regal, who is loyal to the Inland Duchies and has always disliked and distrusted his brothers and the Coastal Duchies, steps up to take his place as king.

Fitz, after surviving Regal's attempt on his life, has several false starts and then is Skill-commanded by Verity to come and find him. With the help of The Fool, Starling and Kestrel, he must find his king.

Together with Queen Kettricken, who escaped Regal's plots after Shrewd's death, the expedition finds Verity, carving and pouring his memories into a Skill-dragon. Kestrel aids him, and together they complete the dragon. Verity says goodbye one last time, and then he disappears into the dragon. Verity-as-Dragon, and the other awoken stone dragons fly over the Six Duchies, defeat the raiders and regain peace to the land once more.

In order to secure the peace, Kettricken's son, Dutiful, later married the Narcheska Elliania from the Out Islands.

In order to win her hand, Dutiful had to go on a quest she had issued (at the Pale Woman's orders) to bring the head of Icefyre, the dragon of Aslevjal to her hearth, which he, with the help of Chade, Fitz and Lord Golden, achieved. Although due to a certain chain of events the head was still attached to the dragon's body and Icefyre was still very much alive. The only female dragon left in the world, Tintaglia then mated with the only male dragon left, which happened to be Icefyre, thus making the future of the dragons assured once more.

Geography
The geography of the Duchies is very diverse. The kingdom has a large coast to the sea to the east, while it also borders the icy mountains of the Mountain Kingdom to the west. The Inland Duchies enjoy large portions of arable land, which has made the Duchies rich from agriculture. Another major source of income comes from local fisheries from the Coastal Duchies. The Duchy of Tilth also possess rich vineyards and fruit gardens, which is possible due to the Bear River and Vin River.

He was typically Farseer in physical appearance, with dark hair and eyes, and was considered handsome; he was rather prone to much primping, taking pains to take care of his looks and wearing elaborate dress. His brown hair was smoother than his brothers' and better tended, oiled, and often scented. He placed more emphasis on appearance than on behavior, in marked contrast to his brothers.

King Regal
He was irresponsible as a Farseer monarch, taking an unusually hard line with criminals, Forged ones and people with the Wit. He created the King's Circle, a gladiator-style ring where he pitted any willing warrior or criminal agaisnt a Forged one. He had not been properly taught to rule, being the third son. He saw King's power as something he wanted, like a child who wants toys, and as means to do whatever he wanted.

He became King through a series of convoluted and dangerous plots.

He plotted extensively against the perceived threat of his brothers; it is likely the "accident" that killed former King-in-Waiting Chivalry was instigated by Regal, and he plotted to poison Prince Rurisk of the Mountain Kingdom to make Kettricken sole heir so that eventually he could marry her, instead of Verity.

After Verity married Kettricken and eventually left to seek the aid of the Elderlings, Regal and his Skilled henchmen Justin and Serene killed King Shrewd. Regal imprisoned and killed Fitz (though Burrich figured out how to make this a temporary death); Kettricken fled into the mountains; Regal declared Verity dead and was crowned — though he knew his brother was still alive.

Regal left Buckkeep and moved the court to Tradeford. In Farrow, he was spoken as the Mountwell king, taking the name of his mother's bloodline.

In the end
As Regal aged, his behavior went from borderline acceptable childish jealousy to unbecoming outright arrogance. He used his new position as King to do as he wanted, however ill-advised, regardless of the effect on the Six Duchies. Towards the end of his reign, Regal developed his mother's taste for drugs and had her same irrational behavior, showing especially when it came to his hatred of Fitz, whom he stopped at nothing to kill.

In the end, Fitz used the Skill on Regal to force him into loyalty towards the Farseer heir and Kettricken, though it was never found out how long this would have lasted, as Regal was killed in his bedroom some time later, most probably by a ferret.

Skill
The coterie which Regal's half-brother Galen, child of Queen Desire, had created was loyal only to Regal, not to the real Farseer king or to the line of Farseers in general. Regal wasn't formally taught to Skill as his mother thought him too weak and delicate for something she saw as labor and hard work. He had the Skill ability, as he was able to use it to talk to and punish his coterie using Will's power.

Other traights
Regal had a fear of anyone different to himself, and would not stand to have someone who was "unwhole" in his presence. This fear was inherited from his mother and extended to include such people as the Fool (although the Fool served as one of Regal's servants for a time) and people possessing the Wit.
Rosemary had a habit of drowsing near Kettricken when she was talking "privately" with Fitz. Apparently she repeated the conversations to Regal and even helped arrange an accident that made Kettricken fall in the stairs though it is unclear whether she realized what she was doing. Kettricken suspects that it was framed for her as a prank or game.

When Regal returned to Buckkeep after the Red Ship War, Rosemary was with him. Her mother had died and she was neglected because everyone saw that she was no longer in the Queen's favour. She was only 8 years old at that time and a half-trained assassin. Chade talked about it with Kettricken, who was ashamed that she had let the situation become what it was, and went to talk with the girl. Rosemary was frightened of her, but when given the option of either to be fostered to Lady Patience or to be Kettricken's page again, she chose to stay. Buckkeep is the coastal castle in the Buck Duchy near the mouth of the Buck River and home to the royal court of the Farseers. The original wooden keep was captured and fortified by King Taker, and the following generations rebuilt it with stone and added more structures, creating layers of labyrinths within the walls.

Since Taker came, the fort has never been taken by outsiders.

Buckkeep is an ideal place for controlling trade. It has the best deep-water port in the Six Duchies, surrounded by good fishing grounds. Trade goods are transported via the Buck River from Farrow and Tilth to Buckkeep town.
The Wit-companion of Fitz.

Appearance
Nighteyes is a wolf, larger than the very big domesticated dog that Fitz tries to pass him off as on numerous occasions, not always successfully.

In temperament, Nighteyes proves to be a humorous if somewhat caustic companion with a pragmatic streak. Those closest to him he deems "Pack," and he's frequently impatient with Fitz's habit of living either in the past or borrowing trouble from the future. Nighteyes' own approach is to live for and in the moment.

As a puppy
Nighteyes was captured by a trapper who killed his dam and his litter mates for their hides. He spent his puppyhood for sale in a trapper's cage until FitzChivalry heard his cries through the Wit and saved him.

Fitz brought him to Buckkeep where he stayed in an abandoned drover's (or herder's) cottage on the edge of the grounds. Fitz spent as little time with Nighteyes as possible, intending because of Burrich's strong sentiments against using the Wit to restore the cub to health and then send him away. Despite his best efforts, Fitz found himself Wit-bonded with Nighteyes.

Early Years
For most of the first summer of the Red Ship Wars, Nighteyes was little involved until the battle at Bearns, where he, Fitz, and Burrich fought side by side to protect Queen-in-Waiting Kettricken. It was after this battle that rumors first started naming Fitz "the Witted Bastard."

Nighteyes was instrumental in Fitz's recovery from Regal's dungeon, taking Fitz's spirit into himself so that FitzChivalry's dead body could be buried. When it came time to put Fitz back in his body both Nighteyes and Fitz fought the command, but Burrich forced them to obey and Fitz was restored to his own life in his own body.

After Fitz's return from death, Nighteyes stayed with him and Burrich at a cottage while Fitz recovered. After Burrich left, Fitz decided to be as much a wolf as he was able to and he and Nighteyes spent the better part of the summer living as wild wolves. In late summer, Fitz decided he wished to have revenge on Regal.

Nighteyes and Fitz followed the Buck River through Farrow and Tilth, hunting Prince Regal. Nighteyes found an opportunity to join a pack of wolves, which he did for a time, but eventually decided that he would rather be with his Wit-bond, Fitz. No sooner had they found Regal than Fitz was Skill-commanded to find King Verity. During their search, they were ambushed in the mountains by another Witted one with a group of hunters from Regal, but they successfully escaped.

Nighteyes found the Fool and brought him to the severely wounded Fitz, who had been shot with an arrow by Regal's hunters. The Fool brought them both back to his cottage in the Mountain Kingdom. During Fitz's recuperation, the "Scentless One" and Nighteyes became close and this bond strengthened throughout the rest of Nighteyes' life.

Finding Verity
Once Fitz was healed, he, the Fool and Nighteyes all set out with Queen Kettricken, Kettle and Starling the minstrel to find Verity beyond the Mountain Kingdom. Along the way Nighteyes was instrumental in their survival as he watched both in front of them and behind them with his seemingly limitless ability to run. He also did a lot of the hunting during the journey, and on many occasions caught meat the party would not have survived without. Along the way he is able to observe that Kettricken had a small predilection for the Wit and through that he was able to create a semi-bond that helped Kettricken get through the hard times they came across during their trek to find her husband, King Verity.

Time with "Badgerlock"
After the Red Ship Wars, Nighteyes and Fitz spent several years wandering the Six Duchies and beyond, getting as far as Bingtown before settling in a cottage not far from Forge. Then followed several years of quiet rural life, during which time they raised Hap to apprenticing age, interrupted only by occasional visits from Starling the minstrel.

Late Life and Death
With the return of the Fool, Fitz began in earnest to think about returning to life at Buckkeep. Nighteyes tried as much as he could to withdraw from their bond to hide his frequent great pain. One day Nighteyes choked on a fish and his heart stopped. In panic and grief, Fitz used both the Wit and the Skill to force him to return to life, although it took the Fool to complete the intervention and halt Nighteyes' death. Infuriated with Fitz's meddling in what Nighteyes intuited to be the natural order of things, Nighteyes withdrew his Wit contact from Fitz.

By the time they returned to Buckkeep, Nighteyes had forgiven Fitz as much as he was able to and they headed out in pursuit of the runaway — or possibly kidnapped — Prince Dutiful and the splinter Old Blood faction known as the Piebalds suspected of possessing him. It is during these adventures that Nighteyes began to truly show his age, failing to keep up easily with Fitz and the Fool as they pursued the prince and only able to catch up infrequently. Nevertheless, he provided what help he could being left behind again.

After Dutiful recovered, Nighteyes died of old age at Fitz's side. Fitz burned the corpse, as is proper for any Six Duchies deceased, and shaved his own head in traditional mourning for his beloved, departed Wit beast.

Dutiful is the son of Kettricken and Verity, although due to the sickly condition of his body at the time of conception, Verity used the Skill to swap bodies with Fitz in order that an heir be produced for the Farseer throne following the death of their first child, Sacrifice. The slightly ambiguous nature of Dutiful's parantage is not an overly large issue towards the future of the Six Duchies; however, he is undeniably a Farseer whichever father is considered his "true" one. None of this is ever revealed to Dutiful.

Dutiful lives in Regal's former grand chambers in Buckkeep and keeps them simple and ascetic in the tradition of his mother's Mountain Kingdom people. He has dark eyes and curling black hair like Verity, but his jawline, slender body and height are more like those of Fitz's father Chivalry.

It is revealed that Dutiful has the Wit as well as the Skill, something that caused him to be kidnapped by the Piebalds. He was bonded to the Cat for a while, before she was killed by Fitz while she attempted to attack Fitz and take over Dutiful's body. Fitz returned to Buckkeep with him and began to instruct him in both of their shared magics.

Dutiful later married the Narcheska Elliania, after going on a quest she issued (at the Pale Woman's orders) to bring the head of Icefyre, the dragon of Aslevjal to her hearth, which he achieved — although due to a certain chain of events it was still attached to his body, causing the loss of her home's door in the process.
Chade Fallstar is the illegitimate, elder half-brother of King Shrewd. His mother was a soldier before she got pregnant by King Bounty. Little is known of his childhood, but he was born near Woolcot and hated his stepfather, a potter, who used to beat him. When Chade's mother died, his stepfather told him to go to his father.

When Fitz first encounters Chade, he is acting as the assassin, spy and adviser to King Shrewd, and he becomes the tutor and mentor for Fitz. He is a shadowy figure who lives in the labyrinth between the walls of Buckkeep; only a small number of people even know he exists, and his true identity as a royal bastard is an even bigger secret.

Chade's face was scarred in an accident when he was young, and his appearance resembles that of the Pocked Man of old stories, though these scars have lessened considerably in his later years. He has green eyes and snowy hair, and is bearded when Fitz first encounters him. During Fitz's apprenticeship years Chade kept a pet weasel, by the name of Slink. When he did venture out of his hiding, it was usually under the disguise of Lady Thyme, an ostentatiously irritable, elderly noblewoman.

During Queen Kettricken's reign, Chade acts openly as her adviser and is quite popular among the ladies of the court. As long suspected by Fitz, he has some of the lesser magics such as scrying in water. He also has some aptitude for the Skill, although it has been damaged by his long use of elfbark as a stimulant, and after an agonized struggle to master it, he becomes part of Dutiful's coterie.

Second son of King Shrewd and younger brother of Chivalry, older half-brother of Regal, about 18 years older than Fitz and two years younger than Chivalry. Husband of Kettricken. Verity and Kettricken had two children, Sacrifice who was still-born and Dutiful who was actually from Fitz's body.

Appearance
When Fitz first sees him, he has a short dark beard, bushy and disorderly like his hair. As Verity is fond of riding and other outdoor activities, his cheeks are weathered. He also has heavy brows and dark eyes. Fitz describes him to Dutiful as a big man, nearly as tall as Fitz but bull-chested with wide shoulders. Fitz also remarks that when Verity wore battle harness, he looked as much soldier as prince.

However, Verity's appearance changes dramatically when he spends the summers of the Red Ship War battling the enemy with the Skill. He is forced to stay indoors and his appetite decreased, as a result of the draining effect of the Skill, leading to extreme weight loss and making him appear older than he truly was.

Personality
Verity was, as his name implies, very truthful and honest. He preferred being outdoors, loved hunting and was very fond of his dog Leon. He had a warm relationship with Fitz from the very beginning, but rarely had time for his young relative, even after he decided to teach more about the Skill to Fitz. He loved maps and spent a lot of time studying and drawing them.

Duties as a Prince
Verity was brought up as "the second" prince, and even when he was pushed up in the line of succession to the throne, often remarked that his older brother would have succeeded in his tasks much better.
Red Ships were chased away by Verity-as-Dragon and the awoken stone-dragons.
In the South, it was referred to as 'the Northern War' and 'the barbarian's war,' and badly affected the economies of places such as Bingtown for years afterward.
