Nobles New Traders are merchants and nobles from Jamaillia who were given land grants by the Satrap Cosgo. These grants run directly counter to the original Bingtown Charter, so the New Traders bribed and bought their land in illegal means. They mostly brought mistresses and workers, not their families, so they are seen as an unwelcome and illegal invasion by some Old Traders. Some of the Old Traders are more welcoming, trying to grow their influence with the Satrap and Jamaillia. Their influx into Bingtown changes the city's political and economic climate drastically. They introduce the normalization of slavery and undercut all of the goods in the city.
They support slaveryThe New Traders are shown to be a grasping and greedy group of people who are constantly trying to either purchase more land, buy information on how to trade with the Rain Wild Traders, or even purchase a liveship. Davad Restart, an Old Trader, acts as a go-between for interested parties in the Paragon, the Ludluck family's derelict liveship. One of the New Traders interested in Paragon is named Mingsley.
When the Satrap visits Bingtown, the New Traders orchestrate a conspiracy to kill him. His death would be blamed on the Old Traders hosting him, and Satrap Cosgo's Chalcedean warship escorts would pacify the town for them. These New Traders believe that they would gain much more power in Bingtown by doing so and they would aid their noble contacts back in Jamaillia. If Chalced proved difficult, they would be dealt with by a Jamaillian fleet. They already sent ravens to Jamaillia claiming Old Trader treachery and received a reply very quickly.
Companion of the Heart to Satrap Cosgo, Serilla, in an attempt to both stymie this coup and gain power for herself, arranges Satrap Cosgo to be kidnapped to the Rain Wilds instead.
After battle with the Chalcedeans over Bingtown, all of the citizens have meetings to determine the direction the new government will take. The New Traders are given the opportunity to work for land that will be given legally in order to have voting rights. Some of them opt to return to Jamaillia rather than stay and work for the land they believe is theirs already.
