Characters in Place is an essay written by Robin Hobb, published on the blog of the UK book store chain Waterstones on the 31st of July 2014. In it, she recalls some of the circumstances of writing Assassin's Apprentice and reveals that among her files from that time
there's a note describing the last paragraph in the (as of yet unwritten) last book about Fitz and the Fool. The essay also explains why she's decided to stay true to that foundation written down decades ago instead of shaping the story to please the readers who sent her angry and disappointed feedback after Fool's Fate.
