Elderling's are a race of people from the myths of the Six Duchies, who, by looking at their ancient relics apprently were an advanced civilization who apparently possessed an abundance of Skill.
Appearance
Although the descriptions of their physical traits are never consistant, it is hinted that they are long-limbed and often have scaley growths. The Ambassador mentioned in The Golden Fool is most likely an Elderling, and looks almost how a dragon might look if it were human.
It has been speculated by The Fool that Elderlings were men and women who were privileged enough for dragons dragons to allow them to spend most of their lives near them. This resulted in the two species became integrated to a degree. Once Eldering , they had extended lifespans, but with much reduced fertility, meaning that children were not born often but when they were they were much treasured.
The dragon's opinions on their young that showed similar integration was not not so positive, outcasting such offspring with human characteristics - probably to become Others.
The Elderlings are first mentioned through myths that Fitz is told as a child growing up, the most prominent mention of a tapestry that hung in his room for all of his time at Buckkeep showing King Wisdom greeting an Elderling.
They later play a much larger part in the Farseer trilogy, with the finding of an Elderling a map which appeared to show routes to the lands of the Elderlings persuading King-In-Waiting Verity to go on a last resort desperate quest to save the Six Duchies by ending the Red Ship War, which the Six Duchies was currently losing. He Verity seemingly vanished, though it was later revealed by that he had ventured into long forgotten Elderling cities, using Elderling created Skill Stones.
