Alise plans to travel to the [[Rain Wilds]], to study the [[dragon]]s first-hand. Hest thinks her studies are foolish, and tries to prevent her travelling, depsite the fact he had vowed to let her go on the trip in their marriage contract. After Sedric supports Alise's arguements, Hest furiously allows her to go, but he punishes Sedric by making him accompany her as a chaperon.

As [[Dragon Keeper]] progresses, we learn that Hest had been overly dominant and sometimes sadistic in his relationship with Sedric. Although Sedric is in love with Hest, it is doubtful if Hest ever felt that strongly for Sedric. It is hinted that by sending Sedric away to the Rain Wilds with Alise, Hest was signalling to Sedric that their relationahip was finished, and that he was moving on to someone else.

After Sedric supports Alise's plan to travel to the [[Rain Wilds]], Hest punishes Sedric by forcing him to go with her, and act as her chaperon.

Sedric is initially incapable of hearing the [[dragon]]s' thought communication, and compares dragon noises to the moo of a cow, which the dragon [[Sintara]] finds offensive. He is set on gathering dragon parts to sell to a [[Chalced]]an for large amounts of money, but when he steals blood from the dragon [[Relpda]], he ingests some of it for unknown reasons, planting the seeds for forming a bond with the dragon. Of course, initially the blood makes him sick. Eventually as the bond grows in strength, he aids the dragon in various manners, resulting in the dragon choosing to make him into an [[Elderling]].

Sedric slowly comes to accept that Hest never loved him, and for the first time, he fully acknowledges how cruel and sadistic Hest is. Sedric forms a relationship with [[Carson]], one of the hunters on the [[Tarman]] expidition.

From their first meeting, Alise and Leftrin are mutually attracted to each other, however they resist their feelings as best they can.

The dragon [[Sintara]] takes a liking to Alise, due to her respectful and flattering way of speaking with her. This fustrates Sintara's keeper, [[Thymara]], who does most of the hard work in caring for Sintara. It also broadens the rift between Alise and Sedric, the latter of which does not think highly of the dragons, and simply wants to return to Bingtown as soon as possible.

Due to their irregular relationship, neither is truly aware of this, and the changes to a large degree undirected. Eventually [[Mercor]] forces [[Sintara]] to take charge of the changes. When Sintara inspects them, she notes the unusual type of changes Thymara is going through, but does not see fit to inform her of them. During the time after this, Sintara makes sure Thymara learns a lot about dragon wings, especially about how they function.

Thymara forms a relationship of sorts with her childhood friend [[Tats]] in [[Dragon Haven]], but she remains wary of sleeping with him, in case she becomes pregnant.

'''Tarman''', a barge, is one of the oldest liveships. He was made before the [[Rain Wild]] people added figureheads to the bow, but instead has painted eyes on his bow. He can only communicate with his crew by mental images.

After captain Leftrin found a wizardwood log, he used its wood to improve Tarman by giving him four webbed feet and a tail, thus improving the maneuverability of the boat.
